  • 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar

  • 1/4 cup fresh orange juice
  • zest of 1 orange
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 12 tablespoons milk (as needed)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven and prepare pans: Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Mix dry ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add wet ingredients: Incorporate eggs, milk, oil, vanilla, orange juice, and orange zest; beat until smooth.
  4. Combine batter: Slowly stir in boiling water until batter is thin.
  5. Bake: Divide batter between pans and bake for 30–35 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool before frosting.
  6. Prepare frosting: Beat butter until creamy. Add powdered sugar, cocoa, orange juice, zest, and vanilla. Beat until fluffy, adding milk if needed. Frost cakes and garnish.
