Cake:
- 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup fresh orange juice
- zest of 1 large orange
- 1 cup boiling water
Frosting:
- 1 cup unsalted butter (softened)
- 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/4 cup fresh orange juice
- zest of 1 orange
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1–2 tablespoons milk (as needed)
Instructions
- Preheat oven and prepare pans: Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- Mix dry ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Add wet ingredients: Incorporate eggs, milk, oil, vanilla, orange juice, and orange zest; beat until smooth.
- Combine batter: Slowly stir in boiling water until batter is thin.
- Bake: Divide batter between pans and bake for 30–35 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool before frosting.
- Prepare frosting: Beat butter until creamy. Add powdered sugar, cocoa, orange juice, zest, and vanilla. Beat until fluffy, adding milk if needed. Frost cakes and garnish.
Notes
- For a more intense orange flavor, add 1/2 teaspoon orange extract to batter and frosting.
- This cake pairs wonderfully with a chocolate ganache drizzle.
